Cooper Media Unit

The Cooper Media Unit is a think tank for student-led writing, publishing, and broadcasting based in a publication seminar taught by Matt Shaw at The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture. Students learn writing, criticism, editing, and the editorial design process, and they participate in the full cycle of publishing for the print magazine Foundation and the CMU.place website. (CMU refers to concrete masonry and “Cooper media” units).

CMU.PLACE

Architecture and design discourse has become fragmented. Critical discussions happen in silos, and across many journals, social media platforms, and online news sites. CMU.PLACE is a collaborative website designed and built by Cooper art and architecture students that brings together these discussions and connects them to student-produced media, including writing, videos, and other content. The site is currently in beta and will continue to evolve with new initiatives.

Foundation

Foundation is the print publication of the Cooper Media Unit. Led by students, it documents the intellectual and cultural life of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture. As a platform for critiques of ongoing public programming, student work, and local events and happenings, Foundation expands dialogue beyond the classroom, creating a record of the School’s institutional memory within the larger context of New York City and its architecture and design community.
